Learning AI Over 50: Why It's Easier Than You've Been Told

Somewhere along the way, "learning new technology" turned into a young person's activity in most people's heads. I don't know when that happened, but I know it's wrong, and I know it because I've watched people twice my age pick this up faster than people half my age — because they actually read the response instead of skimming for a shortcut.

That's the secret nobody advertises: using AI well is mostly about communicating clearly, and if you've spent 50-plus years talking to people, negotiating, explaining yourself, writing letters — you already have the main skill. The "technology" part is thinner than it looks.

Here's a practical way in if you're over 50 and staring at one of these apps wondering what you're supposed to do with it. Pick one annoying task from this week. A confusing insurance letter. A reply you've been putting off. A trip you're half-planning in your head. Type it in as plainly as you'd say it out loud to a friend. Read what comes back. If it's not quite right, tell it what's off — "shorter," "less formal," "explain that part again" — the same way you'd correct someone mid-conversation.

That back-and-forth is the whole skill. There's no exam, no certificate, no wrong way to phrase your first message.

I built On Ramp AI specifically because I got tired of watching people my parents' age get talked down to by tutorials clearly made for 25-year-old software engineers. It starts exactly where you are.
