What Happens to My Data If I Stop Using an AI Chatbot?

ON RAMP AI · BLOG

Someone asked me this after deciding to take a break from an AI app for a while: what actually happens to everything I told it if I just stop using it? It's a reasonable thing to wonder, and the honest answer is that it depends on the specific company and app.

Most AI companies have a privacy policy that spells out how long they retain conversation data and whether it's used for anything like improving their models, and that policy is usually the actual source of truth, not a guess. It's worth actually finding and skimming that page for any app you use regularly, since the details vary more than people expect.

Many apps also let you manually delete your conversation history or your account entirely from the settings, which is worth doing directly if you want to be sure, rather than assuming it happens automatically just because you stopped opening the app.

My practical rule is the same one I use for privacy in general: assume anything you've typed into an app could exist somewhere on their servers until you've actually confirmed otherwise, and don't rely on "I just stopped using it" as a substitute for actually deleting your data if that matters to you.

Stepping away from an app doesn't automatically erase what you put into it. If it matters to you, checking the actual privacy settings and deleting your data directly is the only way to know for sure.

If you want the slow, no-jargon version of all this — the stuff I wish someone had handed me before I fumbled through it myself — that's exactly what I built On Ramp AI for. Check it out here.
