Using AI to Understand a Confusing Utility Bill

ON RAMP AI · BLOG

My electric bill has a line item called "fuel cost recovery adjustment" that has never once been explained to me by an actual human being, despite two phone calls where I asked directly. It just shows up, some months higher than others, and I pay it because arguing with a utility company is a losing bet.

Here's what I do now instead of stewing about it: I take a picture of the bill, or type out the confusing line items, and hand it to an AI chatbot with one instruction — explain this to me like I've never seen a utility bill before, and tell me if anything here looks unusual. It'll walk through each charge, tell you generally what a "delivery charge" versus a "supply charge" means, and flag if a number jumped in a way worth a phone call.

This isn't about becoming an electricity expert. It's about not signing your name to a bill you don't understand every single month for the next thirty years, which is what most of us are doing without thinking about it. The jargon on these bills isn't accidental — vague line items are harder to question. An AI doesn't get tired of your questions or make you feel dumb for asking what "reactive demand charge" means.

It also works on the letter that comes with a rate increase notice, which is usually three paragraphs of legal language hiding one plain sentence: your rate is going up, here's by how much, here's when. You shouldn't need a law degree to read your own gas bill. You just need something patient enough to translate it.

If you want the slow, no-jargon version of all this — the stuff I wish someone had handed me before I fumbled through it myself — that's exactly what I built On Ramp AI for. Check it out here.
