Using AI to Understand Your Paycheck Deductions

ON RAMP AI · BLOG

My cousin started a new job with a benefits package more complicated than anything she'd dealt with before, and her first paycheck had six different deduction lines with abbreviations she didn't recognize, leaving her with a take-home number lower than she expected and no idea why.

She fed a redacted version of her pay stub into an AI chatbot, blacking out anything that felt too personal, and asked it to explain each deduction code in plain terms — what each one was actually for, which ones were required versus optional, and roughly what percentage of her check each was taking.

It walked her through the standard categories most paychecks have — tax withholding, retirement contribution, health insurance premium — and helped her understand that one line she didn't recognize was actually the employer match description, not a deduction from her own pay at all, which had been genuinely confusing her.

For anything that seemed like it might actually be wrong — a deduction that didn't match what HR had told her during onboarding — the real next step was asking her actual payroll department directly, which she felt a lot more confident doing once she understood the terminology well enough to ask a specific question instead of a vague "something seems off."

Paychecks are full of jargon nobody explains, and just accepting the number at the bottom without understanding how it got there is more common than it should be. A plain-English walkthrough of your own pay stub is a small thing that removes a surprising amount of confusion.

If you want the slow, no-jargon version of all this — the stuff I wish someone had handed me before I fumbled through it myself — that's exactly what I built On Ramp AI for. Check it out here.
