Using AI to Plan a Budget-Friendly Holiday Gift List

ON RAMP AI · BLOG

Every year my mother-in-law says the same thing after the holidays: she didn't mean to spend that much, it just sort of happened one gift at a time until the total was bigger than she expected.

This year she used an AI chatbot to set an actual total budget upfront and split it across her list of names, then worked through gift ideas for each person that fit their specific slice of the budget instead of guessing item by item and adding it all up at the end.

It also helped her think through a few people she was stuck on, taking what she knew about their actual interests and turning that into a short list of ideas in the right price range, instead of the usual last-minute panic buy that doesn't fit anyone's stated budget.

She still made the final calls herself, since only she knows her family well enough to pick the right gift. But having the numbers laid out before she started shopping, instead of after, is what actually kept her on budget for the first time in years.

Holiday overspending usually isn't one bad decision, it's a dozen small ones that never got added up along the way. Doing the math before you shop instead of after is the whole trick.

If you want the slow, no-jargon version of all this — the stuff I wish someone had handed me before I fumbled through it myself — that's exactly what I built On Ramp AI for. Check it out here.
