Using AI to Cook Something From What's Already in the Fridge

ON RAMP AI · BLOG

I had one of those weeks where the fridge was full of odds and ends — half a rotisserie chicken, some wilting spinach, a jar of salsa — but nothing that looked like a complete meal on its own, and I didn't want to make another grocery run.

I listed out what I actually had for an AI chatbot and asked for a real dinner idea built around those specific ingredients, not a recipe that assumed I had a fully stocked pantry with things I didn't have.

It put together a simple dish using what I already had, swapped in a reasonable substitute for one ingredient I was missing, and gave me a version I could actually make in twenty minutes instead of a Pinterest recipe requiring six specialty items.

It's become a habit now on nights when I don't want to think about dinner: list what's in the fridge, get a real option back, skip the extra store trip. It's not going to replace an actual cookbook when I want to try something new, but for using up what's already there, it's saved me more wasted food than I expected.

Most food waste happens because odds and ends don't look like a meal until someone tells you how to combine them. Having something to do that thinking for you turns a fridge full of scraps into an actual dinner.

If you want the slow, no-jargon version of all this — the stuff I wish someone had handed me before I fumbled through it myself — that's exactly what I built On Ramp AI for. Check it out here.
