My sister-in-law spent three weeks going back and forth on whether to move from Ohio to be near her daughter in Tennessee, or stay put near the house she'd lived in for twenty-two years. She made a pros-and-cons list on a napkin, then a nicer one in a notebook, then just sort of stopped talking about it because it made her anxious. That's usually where these decisions die — not from a lack of options, but from turning the same three thoughts over in your head until they lose all shape.
I told her to try something different. Open up an AI chatbot and just explain the situation like you'd explain it to a neighbor over the fence: here's what I've got going on, here's option A, here's option B, here's what scares me about each one. Then ask it to lay out the tradeoffs plainly, and ask you the questions you haven't thought to ask yourself.
She did it, and the thing that helped wasn't some brilliant answer — it was that the AI asked her, "What does your daughter think, and does that matter to you more or less than being near your church?" That's not a fact you look up. That's a question that forces you to actually locate your own priorities instead of listing features like you're comparing two refrigerators.
This works for almost any two-option bind: two job offers, two apartments, whether to fix the old car or buy a new one, whether to take the earlier flight or the cheaper one. You're not asking the AI to decide for you — you're using it to organize the mess in your head into something you can actually look at and respond to.
A decision doesn't get easier because you found the "right" pros-and-cons format. It gets easier when someone patient asks you the right question at the right moment. Most of us don't have that person on call at 11pm when we're staring at the ceiling. An AI chatbot, for all its faults, is willing to sit there with you as long as you need.
